10 days in the presence of the UAE Maritime heritage

For 10 consecutive days, Abu Dhabi celebrates the maritime heritage of the UAE, through the second edition of the Maritime Heritage Festival 2023, which is organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi, from February 17 to 26, in the “A’ Al Bahr” area on the Abu Dhabi Corniche. It is expected to attract approximately 50,000 visitors.

The festival takes its visitors on a journey through time, to find themselves transforming into a heritage coastal village that was designed and built on the Corniche, to mimic the ancient villages in the Emirates, according to what was explained by the Senior Program Development Specialist at the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi, Maryam Hamad Al Junaibi, during the media tour that was organized. Yesterday morning, she pointed out that the festival consists of two main parts, namely the fishing village and the trading village, in addition to the traditional games arena and theatre.

Al-Junaibi explained that the fishing village, which is held in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Fishermen’s Cooperative Society, includes the fishermen’s market and the crafts area related to the sea and fishing, and provides the public with information about pearls and diving, through experts in this field, and a daily scene of the fish auction is presented. As for the Trade Village, which is being held this year for the first time, it includes a new program related to fabrics and embroidery. It includes an exhibition of traditional Emirati fabrics, explaining their types, names, where they were made, types of embroidery, and a live display of the manufacture of traditional clothes, their embroidery, and the installation of talli. Also, the visitor can buy fabric and participate in embroidery and stitching. The Trade Village also presents another program on traditional medicine in the Emirates.

25 traditional shops

She pointed out that the festival includes 25 traditional shops, distributed in its various regions, as well as shops for youth projects and food shops, and it is expected that the number of visitors to the event will reach 50,000. Pointing out that the festival includes a large number of events that vary between heritage, culture, entertainment, and sports, are characterized by a family nature, and are appropriate for all ages, such as workshops for the manufacture of wooden bearings for children and adults. The festival stage also witnesses singing sessions and musical performances by Emirati youth, in which 12 singers participate. Pointing out that a daily show will be presented, directed by director Nujoom Al-Ghanem, embodying the great role of the sea in the lives of the residents of Abu Dhabi, as it was not only a source of livelihood, but it was a window to the world and a means of commercial and cultural exchange that the region witnessed in the past, and 15 to 20 people will participate in the show. performing. Many traditional performances are also held, such as Al-Ayyala, Al-Ahla, and Al-Nahma performances. The festival also allows the public to participate in a unique experience of opening oysters on a load docked on the beach or participating in the Nahamin in singing on the load. In addition to watching the show of traditional bearings, which includes a different group of bearings, the number of which ranges from 8 to 10, in order to familiarize the audience with the types and forms of traditional bearings.

Heritage sports

Traditional sports and popular games occupy a prominent place in the festival’s activities, as an arena has been allocated to organize championships for school students for different age groups, as part of a group of these popular sports and games that have been and are still being practiced in the UAE for generations, such as Al-Krabi and Lamtareh. In cooperation with the Emirates Heritage Club, the festival is witnessing the organization of the Abu Dhabi Rowing Boat Race, 40-foot class, with the participation of 1,156 sailors, distributed on 68 boats, with an average of 17 sailors in each boat with Al-Skouni, racing for a distance of four nautical miles, in four runs bearing the colors of the state flag.

This year, the Maritime Heritage Festival is witnessing the organization of a program full of activities that suit different family members of all ages, which embody practices that were an important aspect in the lives of the people of the coastal environment for many years, especially before the boom, highlighting an important era in the region, including various workshops. Traditional games, storytelling, traditional performances such as Al-Ayyala, Al-Ahla, and Al-Nahma performances, reviving the past, exclusive products, and more.
